Karlin came to Brown Memorial with a drive to create more independent readers and writers. The Tutoring Program was the perfect place to make a tangible impact in their community outside of the commotion of the school building.
With a background in literacy education both from their time as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia pre-pandemic and work at a local Baltimore charter school, Karlin loves developing materials, training tutors, and working with students. They started at the Tutoring Program as the Assistant Director to a long-serving Director. Immediately, they hit the ground running and contributed to formalizing the tutoring program’s training methods and offerings for tutor support. When it was time for their predecessor to retire, Karlin was ready to advance to Program Director.
Currently, Karlin is working to build on 60 years of program success and bring it into the 21st century. They are also pursuing their certification in the Orton-Gillingham reading instruction methodology, which is utilized by the tutoring program.
Residing just a few blocks from the church, Karlin lives with their wife, Grace, and their elderly cat, Ma’am. The two were recently married and are enjoying newlywed life. Karlin has convinced Grace to volunteer as a tutor and is in awe of how much work Grace puts into tutoring.
