Tutors are trained to implement the UFLI Foundations curriculum for 1:1 tutoring sessions. This program is rooted in scientifically-based reading research and supported by evidence of efficacy.
Tutors have many avenues of support available to help them in their tutoring. Physical and digital training materials are accessible on demand; program staff is available before, during, and after every lesson; observations and coaching cycles run throughout the year; and peer support with other tutors.
The ability to read provides life-changing access to support and knowledge. Students who are behind in reading in the third grade are less likely to graduate from high school. Without this individualized intervention, some children may never learn to read.
BMTP provides a structured and supportive tutoring environment to make the greatest impact possible.

Tutors are matched with one student for the entire year
Tutors commit approximately 2 hours (75 minutes of instruction and 45 minutes of preparation and wrao-up) each week from October-May.
While we can take preferences into account (especially if you are a returning tutor), matches are not guaranteed for a variety of reasons.
Yes! We provide 16 hours of tutor training prior to October and continual coaching opportunities during the year. Come with whatever background we have and you will become a reading tutor!
Many of our tutors also volunteer as substitutes, so your session will be covered in the case of absence. If you need to take a prolonged amount of time off (such as for a procedure or vacation), we can work to ensure long-term coverage.
While previous knowledge and experience is valuable, all tutors are required to use the UFLI Foundations program to teach reading. This has been carefully chosen to align with the needs of our partner schools and our students.
