SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS

Funding for the program comes from a range of supporters, including Brown Memorial. Eighty percent is raised through generous donations from individuals and foundations committed to advancing literacy and helping the children of Baltimore City succeed.

Consider volunteering to tutor. Tutors commit roughly 90 minutes a week during the public school year. Come visit us to experience the joy and magic that occurs daily.

For The Love Of Reading

Summer Reading Light

One benefit of summer was each day we had more light to read by.”
~Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle

In May, the Tutoring Program hosted its summer book fair. Students (with the assistance of their tutors) were given the opportunity to choose four new books. Tutors were then provided with envelopes to mail the books at various points throughout the summer. There was an array of nonfiction and fiction for all grade levels. Popular series included Captain Underpants, Junie B. Jones, and Pete the Cat.

Mission Accomplished

Throughout the Tutoring Program year students are challenged to write “super” sentences, which include a subject, verb, punctuation, and correct spelling. For each successful sentence a sticker is placed on a communal board, and once they reach 1,000, each of the 8 sessions gets a pizza party. This year, students met the goal by the end of April!

Did you know…

…every tutoring session begins and ends with circle time?
Before students pair off with their tutors, everyone sits around the green carpet, aka “the grass,” and practices a brief mindfulness meditation. We then return as a group before students depart and they are encouraged to share something about their tutoring session: from what syllable game they played to new sounds learned to chapters/books read. Some students are willing to participate right away, for others it takes weeks to work up the confidence.

Final Thoughts

In the final weeks, tutors worked with their students on their entries for the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program Yearbook, a copy of which was presented to each student at the end of the year parties.  Children could write about any topic of their choice.  A student designed this year’s cover as well!
