SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS

Funding for the program comes from a range of supporters, including Brown Memorial. Eighty percent is raised through generous donations from individuals and foundations committed to advancing literacy and helping the children of Baltimore City succeed.

Consider volunteering to tutor. Tutors commit roughly 90 minutes a week during the public school year. Come visit us to experience the joy and magic that occurs daily.

For the Love of Reading March 2022

Polly Want a Cracker

Before the holiday break, Program Director Martha’s daughter Maddie and son-in-law Herby surprised the students by bringing in their Macaws: Gerri and Charlie. The students had been ‘traveling’ to South America as part of our Seven Continents theme, and Maddie and Herby explained that this type of parrot originates from the Amazon Rainforest.

The children were so excited to learn about the birds’ unique personalities and have the chance to pet them – some students were braver than others.

Goodbyes and Hellos

In December, we were sad to say goodbye to Assistant Director Molly, who moved to Boston. Tyleia, her student of three years, wrote Ms. Molly a beautiful farewell thank-you letter (unprompted) – a testament to both the bond they developed and the work they put into their tutoring sessions.

In January, we welcomed Karlin Scudder as the Tutoring Program’s new Assistant Director. Karlin previously served as a Peace Corps Education volunteer in Liberia specializing in literacy. The transition has been seamless, and the children just adore her!

Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, the Tutoring Program makes available to tutors and students a variety of books that tell the stories of illustrious black leaders and change makers. Students read (and wrote about) such figures as Rosa Parks, Duke Ellington, and Sidney Poitier.

Did you know…

that each student who participates in the Tutoring Program receives 10 new books throughout the year?  For Christmas, each child received a copy of Animal Worlds of Wonder. In February, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, program staff selected a book based on the interest and skill level of each child. It is always a great day when the children get to leave tutoring with a new book!
