Russel Paul is an organist and collaborative musician whose work is rooted in a deep love for music’s ability to connect people across backgrounds and traditions.
He joined Brown Memorial in 2025 and was immediately struck by the kindness, humility, and warmth of the choir and congregation. From the start, he experienced a community that is supportive, engaged, and genuinely appreciative of its music ministry.
At Brown, Russel serves as organist, supporting congregational singing, accompanying the choir, and contributing to the musical life of the church. His work includes preparing and selecting music for services, collaborating with clergy and musicians, and playing for services and events throughout the year. He is especially interested in how music can support worship, create meaningful and engaging experiences, while also expanding how the organ is heard and experienced by a wider audience.
Originally from New York City, Russel began playing piano by ear at a very young age before later transitioning to the organ. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Queens College and is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Organ Performance at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. In addition to his church work, he performs as a collaborative pianist with the Pine Forge Academy Choir and the Jason Max Ferdinand Singers, and has appeared at numerous venues, including Lincoln Center and The Riverside Church.
Outside of music, Russel enjoys exploring new food spots and spending time with friends and family.
