SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS

Funding for the program comes from a range of supporters, including Brown Memorial. Eighty percent is raised through generous donations from individuals and foundations committed to advancing literacy and helping the children of Baltimore City succeed.

Consider volunteering to tutor. Tutors commit roughly 90 minutes a week during the public school year. Come visit us to experience the joy and magic that occurs daily.

Opening Day for Tutors is Sept. 19, 2017

Students begin their tutoring sessions with the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program on Oct. 9 and the Tutoring Program staff is excitedly planning for the new tutoring year.

Opening Day for tutors is Sept. 19, followed by two days of training Sept. 26 and 27. No prior teaching experience is required to be a tutor.

Opening Day for Tutors, Sept. 19

Opening Day will take place on the first floor of Brown Memorial’s Fellowship Building. The morning will include a tour of the program new temporary space – the third floor of the Church House while the Fellowship Building undergoes renovation – exploration of new games and materials, and a luncheon. The schedule for Opening Day is:

10:15 – 10:30  New Tutor Coffee and registration

10:30 – 11:00  New Tutor Orientation

10:45 – 11:00  Veteran Tutor Coffee and Registration

11:00 – 12:00  All Tutor Meeting (tour and exploration)

12:00 – 1:00     Lunch provided by the Tutoring Program

Tutor Training, Sept. 26 & 27, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

The Tutoring Program is thrilled to have its own expert Orton-Gillingham educator, Coppie MacFarlane, conduct the training sessions this year.  Coppie will provide the foundation for why the Tutoring Program uses Orton-Gillingham to teach reading, and then take tutors through the basic components of an O-G lesson plan for three types of students.  The second day of training will be a continuation of the first, as well as a focus on teaching the seven syllable types. It is sure to be highly motivational and informative.
